Formation of Nitrogen and Hydrogen-bearing Molecules in Solid Ammonia and Implications for Solar System and Interstellar Ices

چکیده
We irradiated solid ammonia (NH3) in the temperature range of 10Y60 K with high-energy electrons to simulate the processing of ammonia-bearing ices in the interstellar medium and in the solar system. By monitoring the newly formed molecules online and in situ, the synthesis of hydrazine (N2H4), diazene (N2H2 isomers), hydrogen azide (HN3), the amino radical (NH2), molecular hydrogen (H2), and molecular nitrogen (N2) has been confirmed. Our results show that the production rates of hydrazine, diazene, hydrogen azide, molecular hydrogen, and molecular nitrogen are higher in amorphous ammonia than those in crystalline ammonia; this behavior is similar to the production of molecular hydrogen, molecular oxygen, and hydrogen peroxide found in electron-irradiated water ices. However, the formation of hydrazine in crystalline ammonia does not show any temperature dependence. Our experimental results give hints to the origin of molecular nitrogen in the Saturnian system and possibly in the atmospheres of proto-Earth and Titan; our research may also guide the search of hitherto unobserved nitrogen-bearing molecules in the interstellar medium and in our solar system. On the interaction of methyl azide (CH3N3) ices with ionizing radiation: formation of methanimine (CH2NH), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and hydrogen isocyanide (HNC).
Methyl azide (CH(3)N(3)) might be a potential precursor in the synthesis of prebiotic molecules via nonequilibrium reactions on interstellar ices initiated by energetic galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and photons. Here, we investigate the effects of energetic electrons as formed in the track of cosmic ray particles and 193 nm photons with solid methyl azide at 10 K and the inherent formation of meth...
متن کاملLaboratory Studies on the Formation of Carbon-Bearing Molecules in Extraterrestrial Environments From the Gas Phase to the Solid State
A detailed knowledge of the formation of carbon-bearing molecules in interstellar ices and in the gas phase of the interstellar medium is of paramount interest to understand the astrochemical evolution of cold molecular clouds, circumstellar envelopes, and of star-forming regions. Since the present composition of each interstellar environment reflects the matter from which it was formed and the...
متن کاملChemical differentiation in regions of massive star formation.
We have reexamined the origin of the apparent differentiation between nitrogen-bearing molecules and complex oxygen-bearing molecules that is observed in hot molecular cores associated with massive protostars. Observations show that methanol is an ubiquitous and abundant component of protostellar ices. Recent observations suggest that ammonia may constitute an appreciable fraction of the ices t...

Ultraviolet photolysis of various coronene-ice mixtures at low temperature and pressure caused the addition of amino (”NH2), methyl (”CH3), methoxy (”OCH3), cyano/isocyano (”CN, ”NC), and acid (”COOH) functional groups to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) coronene (C24H12), in addition to previously reported alcohol (”OH) and ketone (>C»O) formation. This work represents the first exper...
متن کاملElemental nitrogen partitioning in dense interstellar clouds.
Many chemical models of dense interstellar clouds predict that the majority of gas-phase elemental nitrogen should be present as N(2), with an abundance approximately five orders of magnitude less than that of hydrogen. As a homonuclear diatomic molecule, N(2) is difficult to detect spectroscopically through infrared or millimeter-wavelength transitions. Therefore, its abundance is often inferr...
